Lewis Granger, lawyer and politician, was born in Ohio in 1819. In 1838 he graduated from Jefferson College, Pennsylvania; he then went to Missouri where he practiced law. In 1849, the Granger family moved to Los Angeles where Lewis continued to practice law. Shortly after moving to Los Angeles, Granger was appointed District Attorney. Joseph Walker McCorkle (1819-1884) moved to San Francisco, Calif., in 1849. He was a member of the State assembly (1850-52) and although he was elected as a Democrat to the Thirty-second Congress (March 4, 1851-March 3, 1853) McCorkle found himself to be an unsuccessful candidate for renomination in 1852.
